When veteran politician and former Melbourne football champion Brian Dixon died at 89 on July 9 it brought back fond memories for Nu Country TV producer David Dawson.
And it wasn’t just because Brian played 252 games over 15 seasons for Melbourne including five premierships under Norm Smith.
Dixon, a former Melbourne High School student, was also named in the Demons team of the century and was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2010.
It was during Dixon’s 18 years as a Liberal state politician and minister representing St Kilda that he hit the headlines at the 1974 Sunbury Rock festival.
Dawson, a former economics student at a South Yarra boarding school under Dixon’s tutelage, met his former teacher backstage.
But it wasn’t Dawson who was photographed with Dixon it was a topless blonde music fan whom he introduced to Dixon.
Brian greeted the blonde and agreed to a graphic picture in his role as Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.
Dixon returned the favour by shaking Dawson’s hand after he introduced him to the busty blonde bombshell.
That picture was featured in Melbourne and Sydney tabloid newspapers.
Brian was later asked about the topless fashion by a daily newspaper.
He replied “When my wife is topless with me it is fantastic, but I wouldn’t want my daughters to do it. As for bottomless men, that is unnecessary”.
