Mackay minstrel Graeme Connors, now 70, returns with an older singer-songwriter stockman Kelly Dixon, aged 98 and still singing for his supper.

Kelly expects calls and cards from King Charles when he turns 100.

Connors, who has won 14 Golden Guitars, two APRA Awards and one ARIA Awards in his 50-year career, teamed with Dixon for The Ringer’s Retired – Graeme’s 21st album title track.

The Ringer’s Retired has lyrics reminiscent of Australian classics penned by Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson and memorable melodies that reflect two writers in their prime.

Connors also released his My Lyrical Life book with 217 songs from his pen, recorded by him or artists including Slim Dusty, John Denver and Jon English, plus autobiographical reflections from various phases of his long colourful career.

Graeme celebrated Texan Rhodes scholar singer-songwriter actor Kris Kristofferson who died at 88 on September 28 in 2024.

In 1974 at the age of 18 Connors opened for Kristofferson during his Australian tour.

Kristofferson was so impressed that he took Connors in the studio to produce his 1976 debut album And When Morning Comes.

Graeme’s new duet partner Dixon, born in 1927 in bush town Dirranbandi began his working life at 13 as a trainee stockman on the historic Cubbie cattle station, is still firing on and off stage.

In times devoid of TV and radio, writing bush verse and reciting the works of the masters was his primary form of entertainment.

His journey to becoming a head stockman took him to Kidman Station Bulloo Downs, Tanbar on Cooper Creek and Victoria River Downs – the events and characters he came across provided inspiration for his extensive catalogue of recorded works.

Kelly classics Leave Him in the Longyard, Six Decks to Darwin and Dewdrops on the Bluegrass exemplify his mastery of the bush ballads.
