DAVE'S DIARY - 15 MARCH 2009 - AFTER THE FIRE CD

KEVIN WELCH TRIBUTE SONG ON VINNIES CD
CHARRED HILLS OF MARYSVILLE

Kevin Welch has left a rare invaluable gift on his 12th Australian tour - an evocative song inspired by the blazing tragedy of the Victorian bushfires.

California born Welch, 53 and father of two, was so moved by the horrific holocaust he wrote his song Marysville within days of his arrival.

Kevin and bandmates Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin rushed into the Salt Studio in East Brighton and recorded it for St Vincent de Paul bushfire relief CD After The Fire.

A Vinnies documentary crew filmed Kevin and band recording in the studio operated by Peter Frawley.

The trio performed the song live in concert and on radio and volunteered it through Shock Records executive Dave Laing.

Vinnies Victorian strategic marketing and fund raising manager Carol Taylor phoned long time promoter Rob Hall who helped arrange the recording in a break between concerts.

Carol also enlisted Killarney singer-songwriter Shane Howard who wrote his new tune Carry Me for the CD.

Howard and Sara Storer debuted the song at the Churchill fire benefit on Saturday February 14. The singer then recorded his song, with a little help from his friends, at his home studio at Killarney.

ROSS BUCHANAN AND COUNTRY PAYDIRT

The Welch song was the first single from a CD that also features Country Paydirt singer Ross Buchanan who lost a young son and daughter in the Kinglake fire.

Buchanan fronted a trio with Whittlesea Country Music Festival organiser Vin Anderson, on harmonica, and recorded his song Salty Tears at Salt.

Joe Camilleri, Renee Geyer, Tiddas singer Sally Dastey, Brian Mannix are among the 15 artists who donated their songs to After The Fire.

Veteran author, journalist and C 31 TV host Jeff Jenkins has also written the CD liner notes.
